COD Accepting Basic Firefighter Academy Applications

PALM DESERT, CA—College of the Desert (COD) is now accepting applications to begin a fully accredited Basic Firefighter Academy beginning January 28, 2013, at the new Roy Wilson Fire Training Center in Thousand Palms. The COD Basic Firefighter Academy is designed for working students with evening classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and day time classes on Saturdays throughout the Spring and Fall semesters.

The program is constructed to provide students with a basic knowledge of fire service operations and to provide entry-level skills required by most fire departments. College units earned can be applied to an associate’s degree. Upon successful completion of the academy, students will be eligible to receive their State of California Firefighter I Certificate.

Prerequisites to the academy include:

• Minimum age of 18 to apply

• Possession of a current California EMT certification

• Possession of a transcript of FIT 1 (Fire Protection Organization) or college level equivalent.

• Current Physical Abilities Test Certificate (Biddle or CPAT completed within one year prior to the first day of the academy)

Applications are due no later than Nov. 1, and are available on the COD website www.collegeofthedesert.edu by clicking Academic Programs, Fire Technology, State Fire Marshall Training (Basic Firefighter Academy). Applications may also be picked up in person at the Public Safety Academy (PSA) lobby on the main COD campus Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Completed hard copy applications should be dropped off in person at the PSA lobby or mailed to: College of the Desert, 43500 Monterrey Avenue, Palm Desert, CA 92260, Attention: I.
