INDIO – John F. Kennedy Elementary Math & Science Magnet School and Carrillo Ranch Elementary Magnet Academy have just started “open enrollment” for students wishing to attend either school through Feb. 28. Students may enroll from any valley city for the 2013 – 2014 school year.
Both schools are Desert Sands Unified School District’s (DSUSD) newest “magnet schools” offering specialized programs in Math and Science and Visual and Performing Arts while maintaining rigorous standards based core curriculums. The schools offer hands-on innovative instruction and are operating below capacity with openings for new students.
As public schools and part of the DSUSD, both schools are free to attend. The schools (K-5), located in Indio, are seeking new students to experience two unique educational opportunities in academics, math and science and visual and performing arts.
A magnet school is a public school that provides innovative instructional opportunities by offering specialized curriculum while promoting equity, diversity, and academic rigor. While teaching all grade level standards, magnet schools also allow students to experience in-depth learning in specific subject areas such as math, science, and the performing arts.
Magnet schools do not restrict enrollment based on district boundaries. K-5 students from all over the Coachella Valley who have an interest in the arts or sciences may apply to attend these schools.
Indio’s Carrillo Ranch Elementary Magnet Academy for the Arts opened its doors in 2005 and officially became a Magnet School in the fall of 2010, when it was awarded a Federal Magnet grant for the Visual and Performing Arts. The dynamic curriculum engages K-5 students in rigorous academics as well as music (vocal, instrumental and band), dance, drama, art and audio/visual engineering. Students learn to read music, play a variety of instruments and compose their own musical pieces. The school has extensive art materials and highly qualified instructors to foster the artist in every child. In addition, there is a dedicated state-of-the-art keyboard lab, as well as the latest in audio/visual equipment, including wireless microphones.
“Here at The Ranch, our students are creating, rehearsing, performing, and composing all through the day. Whether it’s art, drama, dance or various forms of music, our students will get to do it all. I urge parents who think their child would benefit from what we offer to apply now for a limited number of openings we have,” said John Waybrant, Carrillo’s Principal.
John F. Kennedy Elementary, a Math Science Magnet school, offers students a variety of opportunities specializing in a learning environment that is hands on and inquiry based specific to math and science. Students will learn math strategies recognized in Singapore as “modeled drawing” and students will have an opportunity to participate in building a “command module” and become a member of the “Tremor Troop.”
“We also have a dedicated science lab unique to other elementary schools. With the recent modernization at John F. Kennedy Elementary, Math Science Magnet school, we have a new library and additional classrooms to accept families interested in attending our school.
If your child is interested in space exploration, earthquake education, gardening, numbers, word problems and many other areas that reflect science and math, John F. Kennedy is the place for them,” said Ann Morales, Kennedy’s Principal. “Our goal is to provide your child with the best education possible through hands on experiences specific to science and math.”
