On Monday, Jan. 14 at approximately 1:30 p.m., Cathedral City Police Department was dispatched to the 33140 block of Cathedral Canyon Dr, regarding an irate subject breaking Christmas lights at the location. The reporting party was terrified and immediately hung up the phone after calling. The reporting party called back and advised Dispatch the subject had a pellet rifle that realistically resembled a hunting rifle and the subject wanted the police to shoot him.
CCPD had responded on a previous call to the address where the subject stated he would make police to shoot him if they showed up again. Officers had knowledge the subject had prior convictions for narcotics, assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, felon in possession of a firearm, and attempted murder.
As officers arrived they heard the sound of a weapon being shot in the area. CCPD officers cordoned off the area. CHP’s H63 responded to assist. CCFD also responded as a precaution. The subject climbed atop the roof with a rifle. Officers called the subject and spoke with him. He told the officer on the phone he had an “automatic rifle,” he wanted to be “front page news,” and wanted “suicide by cop.”
After almost an hour the subject was peacefully detained without further incident. The rifle was a .22 Caliber pellet rifle with a scope. The subject, Christopher Lopez Ramirez, 39, of Cathedral City was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation. Neither Ramirez, reporting parties, witnesses, nor officers were injured during this incident.
