SAN DIEGO – If you’re looking for a cool place to beat the desert heat, then a visit to one of the 3rd Corner Wine Shops and Bistros should top your agenda. With last weekend’s temperatures hitting 118 degrees, we headed for San Diego’s beaches.

As the temperature gauge dropped, it was comforting to find a familiar place at the 3rd Corner Wine Shop and Bistro in Ocean Beach. Owner Ed Moore operates three similar wine shop and bistros – in Palm Desert, Ocean Beach and Encinitas. Moore says he spends half his time in San Diego County and the other half in the Desert. I can see why. He enjoys the best of both worlds without missing out on his selection of more than 800 wines and champagnes while enjoying five star cuisine at a reasonable price.

I ordered the Baked Brie with mushroom wrapped in puff pastry with basil and roasted garlic ($11). I love brie and this version was a real treat.

We ordered a classic Caesar Salad and Beet Salad ($7 each) both were delicious. My husband ordered their Wild Sea Scallops entree, pan seared in white wine lemon sauce served with tomatoes, niçoise olives, capers, green beans and roasted potatoes ($21).

“These are the best scallops I’ve ever had in my entire life,” he said. That’s high praise from someone who’s very picky about his seafood. I ordered the Seared Ahi Tuna ($21) served with crusted edges and the same sides as the scallop dish – they melted in my mouth. The salads and Ahi portions were large enough to take back to our motel room for a midnight snack later.

The 3rd Corner Wine Shop and Bistro isn’t just another wine-themed restaurant – it’s a unique concept that combines a retail wine shop with a true California Bistro menu. Moore’s motto is: “We make eating out fun again.”

We couldn’t eat another morsel, but promised to return another day to try one of their delicious desserts. Whether you’re going to their Palm Desert, Encinitas or Ocean Beach location, you’re sure to have a meal to remember.
